Black Mountain bought the long-time accounting firm that I really liked. I worked with the same accountant for 4 years. After getting a letter that my prep fee would be greatly increased for the next tax period I switched to TurboTax. TurboTax found the QBI deduction for my partnership and just on a whim I went back through our last 4 years of taxes. The first two years were fine - but Black Mountain missed the QBI deduction for the next two years. I had to file an amended return to get the several thousand dollars we paid as a result of this mistake refunded. I also saw that they had listed a $70k+ pension in one box on our 1040, which we don't have and have never had. They did not include it in subsequent calculations so it didn't affect anything, but it was another sloppy mistake.

Black Mountain did my families taxes for a few years, but then last week sent us a letter saying they no longer wanted to do our taxes anymore, without explanation. They stated that this would be “in the best interest of both parties.” I suppose I agree now since any company that dumps you out of the blue doesn’t deserve your hard earned money. Negative Responsiveness, Professionalism

We were not told our accountant had left and tried to contact someone at the business. We then got a letter saying they were dissolving our relationship without any details We were definitely going to go somewhere else even before the letter Negative Responsiveness

Found out a month ago from the IRS that my 2019 tax return had lots of mistakes. Partly my fault for not doing a good job reviewing their work. Black Mountain didnt list any of my stock sales form my brokerage account. Its going to be ugly when I get the bill from the IRS. Negative Quality

Similarly, we had our taxes done for 20 years by Tom Hogendyk and never had an issue. This year with the new team, due to their error our taxes had to be amended. We have not seen our refund check which we are now responsible to hunt down on our own. The we feel your interests would be better served elsewhere dropping us as clients letter was strange and unprofessional. Katherine is professional and pleasant to work with however, we wished we had left when Tom did.

Ben Reynolds is the best accountant I could ask for. There are no questions he won’t answer in a timely manner! I would recommend him to anyone who needs an attentive and extremely well versed accountant!

Very knowledgeable, quick to answer any questions, and friendly! Have been using them for years and will continue to do so!

Efficient, thorough service. Personable staff that responded to my questions quickly. Highly recommend.

POTENTIAL CLIENTS BEWARE, PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING USING THESE GUYS. As a business owner myself I hate having to leave reviews like this but unfortunately I feel like I have no choice. So Black mountain has been doing our taxes since 2018, and Tom H. was our original CPA and we liked him. He retired and moved on and that is when we immediately noticed some issues. The biggest one now being that we have been audited for the first time in 20 years for our 2020 taxes for a gigantic, rookie mistake that their preparer Katherine made. I am being told she is gone now, and ironically about 7 months before we recieved this audit letter from the IRS saying we owe $7,000 due to a mistake, Black Mountain dropped us a client. The CPA at black mountain forgot to enter my spouses income for 2020 into our taxes and it was blatantly obvious that she was employed. There was an unemployment form in the packet(you cant collect unemployment without being employed first) we submitted and we emailed katherine her W2 about 2 weeks after we dropped off our packet of documents. BM insisted that there be no contact during COVID so we were instructed to drop off our packet in a drop box which I will say made myself and my wife very uncomfortable to begin with as we were worried about lost documents. So now BM is telling us to get lost and that they will not assist with our amended return even though the mistake that was made is unbelievably sloppy and our current CPA has labled it "a terrible rookie mistake." They have made it clear that they don't even want to try and help us in anyway shape or form and in an email from Ben the office mananger they even say "do not contact us again" in a very rude and smug manner. This has to be some of the worst customer service I have ever seen in my life, and its not like this was our fault and we forgot to declare income from a rental, or delcare cryto assests that need taxes paid. We've always been very honest in reporting what we have. This type of refusal to help right their mistake would be the equivalent to a car dealership putting the wrong type of fuel in your car and having it break down and then say to you "well their was no sticker on the gas cap saying what fuel it took, sorry you're on your own!" DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE GUYS, USE ANYBODY ELSE. A 12 year old with turbo tax would probably be a safer bet, and I will make sure to never recommend anyone associated with this firm to anyone.

We received the same, very poorly written letter "dismissing us from their business" without explanation. The advice we received from a former employee (we were told he was no longer with the firm!) was marginal and the fee was twice what our new CPA charged. Further, for the first time in over 50 years we have had fraudulent tax returns filed. While is apparent our personal information could be obtained by sophisticated hackers, I cannot help but think that BM might have something to do with this issue. The Colorado Department of Revenue does not see their job to chase down persons who are filing fraudulent claims, rather suggested contacting the police who do not see this as a priority. End result, I would stay away from this firm.
